Spring in Vermont Inspires Comfy Living
It’s April and I had snow covered flowers outside my window about a week ago. It may seem crazy, but I thought there was something so pretty about that deep purple popping through the white covering. As I said to friends on Facebook that day …
April snow reminds me that transitions – even ones that we choose – are not always easy.

I love all of Vermont’s seasons and I actually enjoy the unexpected twists of the weather here. I think it’s Mother Nature’s way of teaching us flexibility and perseverance in transitions. That’s something that comes in handy when you’ve moved as many times as I have!
Taking Care of Yourself in Transition
Since I left my sweet little town, St. Johnsbury, Vermont, when I went off to college, I’ve lived in:
- Syracuse, New York
- Washington, DC
- London, England
- Sackets Harbor, New York
- Lafayette, Louisiana
- Winchester, Virginia
- Burlington, Vermont
- Atlanta, Georgia
- St. Johnsbury, Vermont
I’ve moved nine times and about halfway through I learned an important lesson: create a comfy space just for you.

An Oprah Magazine Quote that Fed My Soul
I used to be an avid Oprah Magazine subscriber. I read it cover to cover. One quote that I cut out, I’ve carried with me for almost 20 years.
“I had rather be shut up in a very modest cottage, with my books, my family, and a few old friends, dining on simple bacon, and letting the world roll on as it liked, than to occupy the most splendid post, which any human power can give.”
Thomas Jefferson
When I framed this quote from Thomas Jefferson I had no idea that it would become a central part of every “cozy corner” that I ever created for myself.
The simplicity of his vision spoke to my soul.
Having a “cozy corner” also speaks to my soul. Every morning I make a cup of coffee and head to my little corner of the world. I think, pray and prepare for my day wrapped in my blanket. The comforts of home embrace my soul in this space.
It takes so little to have such a big impact on our own well being.
Three Easy Steps to Creating Your Own “Comfy Corner”
#1 – Comfy chair where you can cuddle up and feel supported.

#2 – Sunny corner where the sun rises and warms your soul as the day starts.

#3 – Framed words, quotes or prayers that always bring you back to yourself.

I’d Love to Hear from You!
Do you already have a cozy corner in your home? What do you include in it? I’d love to see a picture and hear about it! If you decide to create one, please keep me posted and let me know how it feels!
Truly,
Julie
Your. Soulful. Spaces.
I don’t have a corner, yet! My hopes are when we get the master bedroom floor finished and moved in….I want a cozy chair to look out the window.
Hi Kristina! That sounds like a really nice combo … new floors and a cozy space! Sometimes just quiet time looking out a window is all my soul needs to recharge. Please share a picture once it’s all done! Thanks for sharing, Julie
Hi Julie,
Nice to see you have landed in a comfy space; at least for now. For me, still after 53 years, St. Johnsbury is a comfy place. It is nice to know whole people as distinct from the parts of people you come in contact with in the parts of your life in suburbia.
Thank you! Deep roots feel so soulful and meaningful! I love hearing StJ described as “comfy” … it sure is.
