See Possibilities, Not Obstacles

I’m sitting here contemplating how to start writing this and tears just filled my eyes.

Watching your parents grow older can be hard, but the alternative is much harder.

During the last year of my Dad’s life I was struggling through a major move and life change. I was not happy and it impacted my relationship with my Dad. He didn’t understand my sadness. I couldn’t enjoy him as much because of my own struggles.

My heart will always wish for a redo … which brings me to last Sunday in New York City.

My Mom on our way to my niece’s show in New York City

My Mom and I went into the city to see my niece’s performance in ‘Gaslight’.

My Mom wouldn’t have missed it for the world!

As she said to me, ‘How many more opportunities will I have to do this?’

Some people might see that as a sad moment – talking about the reality of the time left on Earth. In this case, I saw it as a rally cry. ‘Hell yes, let’s get Grandma into NYC and have fun!’

Slow and Steady Wins the Day

When I’ve gone into NYC in the past, it’s a whirlwind of trains and a mad rush to get where we’re going.

Last Sunday was different.

The gifts of that day started with our slow and steady walk to the theater.

My Mom talked about coming into New York as a teenager. Her friend’s parents owned a gallery on Madison Avenue. I could just envision her “taking Manhattan” and loving it.

She also shared with me that, at one point in her life, she thought about retiring in NYC.

I always knew that she loved the city, but it was special to really hear her share how much.

Doing NYC Like a Native

I also got “schooled” – in the best way – as we strolled the city streets.

Now, I know, watch for the crossing signs and don’t miss a chance to keep moving! She had us crossing streets when I would have waited to go straight. That way we beat both lights!

Over the years she’d tell me how “easy” it is to get around NYC (it’s numbered and in a grid). It never felt easy, rather overwhelming, until I slowly walked it with her.

Understanding how to navigate NYC is a gift that she gave me last Sunday. I love the city and now, I won’t hesitate to go in and enjoy it without worrying about, ‘How do I get where I want to go?’.

My Niece’s NYC Debut

All of this came before we even stepped inside the theater to see my niece perform.

Shannon’s performance was wonderful!

My Mom sat in the second row to make sure that she heard every word.

As my Mom told a friend on Facebook, “We’ve been watching Shannon since her first performance at 9 through high school and college. It was totally thrilling!”

Where There Is Doubt, Faith

When someone gets older, they often face doubt from other people. Their abilities are questioned. Their desires are not always honored.

I had to slow down and be gracious to honor her wishes.

She could have done it on her own and would have (no doubt!) because she is still independent and able to make decisions for herself. I wanted to make it easier on her by walking with her.

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in New York City it was easy for me – and so joyful!

It’s not always easy as we navigate our parents growing older, but, pausing and considering all that they have done for us – and honoring their wishes – is so worth it.

Truly,

Julie
