I was walking with my dear friend Beth, a mother of three boys, and I started describing this divine moment that I had with my son.

After 3 hours at the ski mountain, he fell asleep on the way home. He’s six, so normally when I pick him up out of the car, he wakes up. Not this time.

I laid him on the couch under a blanket and I snuggled on the other end. 45 minutes later … I woke him up to be sure he’d sleep that night.

What Happened Next

It’s what happened next that I described to my friend Beth out on our walk.

He nuzzled into me, with his rosy warm cheeks and his sweet hand on my chest, and fell back asleep. I didn’t move a muscle.

At that moment, it was as if I was cradling him as a baby. He even looked like baby like to me. More moving was how it felt. It was, as if, for just a moment, I was transported back to when I was a new mom.

Savor This Moment No Matter What

At that moment, my husband wanted me to get up and help him do something.

I said, “No”.

He was frustrated.

He didn’t understand the moment and that’s okay. What he needed at that moment wasn’t as important as what I was experiencing.

Don’t Miss Divine Moments

It felt divine.

I would stay still for as long as my 6-year-old wanted to snuggle and I did. I understood the moment.

Beth said that she would love to have a day – to go back and be with each of her boys at different stages as they grew.

We’re just coming off of Christmas and I said to her, “Wouldn’t that be the greatest gift?”

When a baby arrives, so many people tell you, ‘it goes so fast!’ When you’re in those early years, you’re savoring moments and also surviving some. Intellectually, you know time is passing and the baby is changing, but it’s only after, when you are on the other side, that you really get it.

Today, I look at newborn pictures of my son or those 10-month-old smiles or even just a year ago when his face had more “baby” in it and it stops me.

How deeply grateful I feel to have lived each moment.

If You Could Have One More Day …

If you could pick a stage of your child’s life to go back and have one more day with them – what age or moment in time would it be?

It’s hard to choose!

For me, there was such awe and wonder in watching him learn to walk and talk. It was like the best science experiment I ever witnessed! There were so many moments when I couldn’t believe what I was witnesses – it felt magical!
