My Unofficial “Emergency” Contact

I didn’t plan on writing a blog about coming into “the age of readers” until my friend Sarah came to my rescue!

My son was having an allergic reaction on his skin and I had no Benadryl.

She’s one of my oldest friends, lives down the street and is a nurse.

So, by default, she gets ALL calls and text messages about random illnesses and accidents.

But, this isn’t about amazing friends who bring Bendryl in the pouring rain.

THIS is about what she was wearing – on her head – when I opened the door!

We’ve Reached the ‘Age of Readers’

You see, somehow, some way, we have reached the ‘age of readers’. One minute, you’re looking at someone else wondering, ‘How many pairs do they really need?’, and the next, you’re spending half your life searching for your damn readers!

One day, you can read your phone and the next, you can’t.

So, there she was at my door with her newest accessory.

READERS!

And there I was, having just taken off my readers, but keeping them close by so that I could read the directions on the medicine bottle.

Friends Make Growing Older (and Wearing Readers) Better

Sarah is not my only lifelong friend (I am blessed, I know!).

My friend Katie was in our nursery school class too!

My friend Katie was the first to share her shift to the ‘age of readers’ with a text message of this photo.

One of my favorite text threads included a picture of her with her daughter.

Gracie is gorgeous, just like her Mama. But, the real eye catcher of this photo – those READERS!

In a matter of seconds, Sarah and I had shared our “reader pics” from that exact moment. (I was at a restaurant where I could not order without them!)

We were thousands of miles apart, yet, we celebrated exactly where we were in our lives.

All of us have come so far, in a million different ways, with a million pieces that make up the puzzle of a life, and we still have each other – to laugh, cry, and sometimes just share a collective change that comes with growing older.

The Baby of the Bunch

We have one baby in the bunch.

Our friend Nicole skipped a grade, so she’s smart as heck and she hasn’t made it to the ‘Age of Readers’ … YET! Though she did send this cute picture of her in her “blue light filtering glasses”.

Hang on Nic, here’s how I know it’s coming …

My Newsroom Neighbor’s Collection of Readers

It wasn’t that long ago that I was sitting next to my co-worker at WCAX, Bridget Berry Caswell, and “trying on” her menagerie of readers.

Now I understand why she needed a collection.

She was patient and kind with my “dress up” games. She KNEW, one day, I’d be right there with her!

As you can see from this “in the moment, no make up, ready for bed pic” from the night Sarah showed up, there’s no way I could have written this blog without my readers.

So, how do I embrace coming into ‘The Age of Readers’?

I think to myself – you are one cute, fun, nerdy looking 48-year-old and you’ve got lifelong friends – who bring into focus – the true joy of growing older.
